Temporada de Premios: Ganadores de los Premios de la Academia

Y así se acabó la temporada de premios, pero que manera tan increíble de hacerlo. Hollywood hace historia, tras premiar Parasite como la Mejor Película de la temporada. La película coreana de Bong Joon Ho hizo historia tras llevarse 4 estatuillas a casa, y convirtiéndose en la primera película internacional en ganarse el premio a Mejor Película.

En su discurso, Bong Joon Ho hace honor a Martin Scorsese, llamándolo su maestro e impulsor mientras estaba en la escuela de cine.

Otros de los momentos más conmovedores fue el discurso de Hildur Guðnadóttir después de ganar Mejor Banda Sonora por Joker, donde hace honor a todas las mujeres que deben de ser reconocidas en la industria del cine.

Aunque estas premiaciones fueron fácil de predecir, aún no dejan de sorprender algunas categorías como el premio de Mejor Efectos Visuales a 1917, o Mejor Documental a American Factory.

Temporada de Premios: Ganadores de los BAFTA 2020

Los EE British Academy Film Awards tuvieron lugar en Londres el domingo en el Royal Albert Hall. La ceremonia fue organizada por Graham Norton y se transmitirá exclusivamente en BBC One y BBC One HD más tarde esta noche en los Estados Unidos. La ceremonia también se transmite en todos los principales territorios del mundo. En esta temporada de premios truncada, los BAFTA de este año llegaron solo dos días antes de la fecha de entrega de las boletas de la Academia el 4 de febrero. BAFTA tiene una superposición de varios cientos de votantes, que residen principalmente en Londres, Nueva York y Los Ángeles.

Aproximadamente 6,700 miembros de BAFTA votaron por las nominaciones que abarcan 39 largometrajes. La épica 1917 del director de cine y cineasta británico Sam Mendes, que obtuvo nueve nominaciones, se llevó a casa siete victorias, incluyendo Mejor película y Mejor película británica. Temporada de Premios: Nominados a los Writers Guild Awards 2020

Como cada año, los Writers Guild of America anuncian cuáles son los nominados de esta temporada en sus distintas categorías de televisión, nuevos medios, radio, noticias y redacción promocional.

Game of Thrones , el exitoso programa de HBO que culminó su octava y última temporada a principios de este año con la mejor victoria en una serie dramática en los Emmys, fue rechazado en el anuncio de la WGA del jueves.

Sin embargo, Fleabag, que ganó el Emmy por la mejor serie de comedia y la mejor escritura para una serie de comedia, no fue elegible para una nominación a la WGA dado que su creador y escritor, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, no es miembro del gremio.

En otra parte, Succession, ganador del Emmy de este año por la mejor escritura para una serie dramática, estuvo representado en las nominaciones de la WGA el jueves. Entre los recién llegados a la lista de este año se encuentran Watchmen de HBO y Russian Doll de Netflix .

Temporada de Premios: 2020 Producers Guild Awards

The Producers Guild dio a conocer las mejores producciones de cine y televisión del año el sábado en la 31a entrega anual de los Premios PGA en el Hollywood Palladium. 

1917 se llevó el primer premio cinematográfico. Mantiene el impulso fuerte con la epopeya de la Primera Guerra Mundial de Sam Mendes, que es producida y financiada por Amblin Partners y New Republic, después de que recogió el Globo de Oro a la Mejor Película - Drama a principios de este mes.

¿Se levantaron a las 5AM para ver los nominados a los Premios de la Academia? Porque yo sí, y me emocioné tal y como lo esperaba. Los nominados no son una gran sorpresa pero llegan finalmente para ya concretar la Temporada de Premios y aclarar la gran pregunta: ¿cuáles han sido los favoritos de la industria en esta temporada?

Los nominados de los Oscars son elegidos por miembros de la Academia en sus diferentes categorías: directores nominan directores, actores nominan actores, y así, mientras que el gran galardón es escogido por todos los miembros.

Este año, la competencia está dividida en cuatro grandes películas: Joker (con 11 nominaciones), 1917 (con 10 nominaciones), Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood (con 10 nominaciones) y The Irishman (con 10 nominaciones).

Las grandes sorpresas son la ausencia de Greta Gerwig en Mejor Dirección; Jennifer Lopez a Mejor Actriz de Reparto; The Farewell, incluyendo la nominación de Awkwafina para Mejor Actriz; Frozen II en la categoría de Mejor Película Animada; y Rocketman a nivel general, incluyendo Mejor Actor para Taron Egerton.

Temporada de Premios: Nominados a los BAFTA 2020

Las nominaciones para los Premios de Cine BAFTA 2020 del Reino Unido se anunciaron el martes, con “Joker” presente en 11 categorías. La oscura historia del origen del villano del cómic, protagonizada por Joaquin Phoenix, es candidata para mejor película, actor principal, mejor guión adaptado y mejor director.

La película épica de la mafia de Martin Scorsese “The Irishman” y “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” de Quentin Tarantino recibieron 10 nominaciones.

Phoenix, quien ganó un Globo de Oro al mejor actor en una película dramática el domingo, se une a Leonardo DiCaprio, Adam Driver, Taron Egerton y Jonathan Pryce en la categoría de actor principal. Jessie Buckley, Charlize Theron, Scarlett Johansson, Saoirse Ronan y Renée Zellweger — que se llevó a casa el Globo de Oro el domingo– son las nominadas en la categoría de actriz principal. Margot Robbie fue nominada dos veces como actriz de reparto: una por su interpretación de Sharon Tate en “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” y otra por “Bombshell”.

La ceremonia de entrega de premios, que se considera un indicador importante para los Oscar, se llevará a cabo el 2 de febrero.

Crítica Cinéfila: 1917

En lo más crudo de la Primera Guerra Mundial, dos jóvenes soldados británicos, Schofield (George MacKay) y Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) reciben una misión aparentemente imposible. En una carrera contrarreloj, deberán atravesar el territorio enemigo para entregar un mensaje que evitará un mortífero ataque contra cientos de soldados, entre ellos el propio hermano de Blake.

La Primera Guerra Mundial terminó hace un siglo y un año, y ahora no puede quedar nadie que lo recuerde. La mayoría de la población actual del mundo probablemente no tiene idea de por qué se peleó y cómo eran las condiciones. Sin embargo, el cine no ha permitido que esta época y este importante hecho histórico de la humanidad no pasen por desconocido para nadie, trayéndolo a la vida con películas ficticias tan conocidas como The Great Dictator, Lawrence of Arabia y Tolkien, o documentales informativos como They Shall Not Grow Old y The Great War. 

A la velocidad de las nuevas tecnologías que hoy se adaptan al cine, ya no solo se trata de la historia, sino también de cómo se cuenta. 1917  no tiene interés en abordar las circunstancias que provocaron la guerra, es más inicia con ella bien avanzada; pero se dedica apasionadamente a describir las condiciones de sus soldados en términos visuales que llevan a la audiencia con la mano en el pecho en compañía de sus dos solddados protagonistas, que de casualidad pareciese que andan volando para darnos una buena visión de la realidad, aunque ocasionalmente dejan de aletear, cayendo en un infierno sangriento y fangoso.

Schofield (George MacKay) y Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) son dos soldados atrapados con otros 1,600 soldados británicos en las trincheras de la línea Hindenburg el 6 de abril de 1917. Para su mala suerte, son enviados a entregar una carta del general Erinmore (Colin Firth). La misiva, que se entregará personalmente al coronel Mackenzie (Benedict Cumberbatch), comandante del segundo batallón, contiene órdenes de no proceder con un avance planeado desde el frente debido a la inteligencia que confirma que es una trampa enemiga. El viaje implica una caminata de alto riesgo durante la noche a través de un terreno ocupado recientemente por los alemanes, lo que significa que  las trampas explosivas y otros peligros ciertamente acechan en el camino. 

Schofield es un muchacho serio, de complexión clara y alto, del tipo que a menudo se asocia con los jóvenes ingleses de la época, mientras que Blake es más bajo y de cabello negro. En el camino, los dos hombres encuentran que los alemanes realmente han abandonado sus trincheras, aunque es bastante notable que sus estructuras subterráneas son mucho más ordenadas y mejor construidas que las de sus contrapartes británicas. Ni siquiera 45 minutos después, ocurre una ataque impactante y completamente inesperado, pero la odisea terrible debe continuar, y los personajes del camino harán que la aventura no sea completamente trágica.

Hay unos momentos de triste respiro y, con todo el caos, uno se pregunta fugazmente cómo es posible que tal viaje termine en el destino deseado. Aún así, la manera de contar historias sigue siendo una con el enfoque estético de todo el proyecto, que es mostrar y no contar, y el destino de todos los hombres finalmente está en manos del coronel que los dos viajeros fueron enviados a buscar. 

El objetivo puede implicar tantos riesgos y complicaciones como sus guionistas Sam Mendes y Krysty Wilson-Cairns se han dedicado a desarrollar a lo largo de la película. Pero la simplicidad de la configuración para fines cinematográficos posee un atractivo elemental innegable, y Mendes y su director de fotografía Roger Deakins se han propuesto el desafío de contarlo sin problemas, sin saltos en el tiempo o ediciones visibles, para representar una visión más realista del camino y los retos de nuestros protagonistas.

Sin embargo, logran el efecto de un continuo y singular plano secuencia durante toda la película, efecto visual que ha cautivado al cine en diversas ocasiones (algunas de mis favoritas son Gravity, Children of Men y Birdman) A medida que los hombres atraviesan una distancia considerable sobre un terreno que ofrece pocas comodidades, hay momentos en los que la cámara gira, entra en la oscuridad o pasa de un reino a otro, todo lo cual proporciona momentos para que un interludio termine (o mejor dicho, cantar Corte). Todas las "tomas" de la película están perfectamente conectadas, creando la sensación de que seguimos estos soldados a tiempo real, con Deakins y su equipo utilizando la nueva cámara Alexa Mini LF que proporciona el doble de resolución que el modelo anterior, con movimientos de cámara sobresalientes y la acción de formas extraordinariamente fluidas, elegantes y reveladoras que nunca antes se habían visto. 

Se podría argumentar que la posición de seguir adelante y hacer un simple corte de una perspectiva a otra no disminuiría de manera palpable el impacto del trabajo; ¿A quién le importaría si hicieras cortes juiciosos en lugar de esconderlos en la oscuridad o por algún otro medio? Pero es obvio que se plantearon un desafío y descubrieron una forma de lograrlo, obteniendo un magnífico resultado desde cualquier punto de vista. Aquí, indiscutiblemente, hay una película para ser vista en la pantalla grande como la naturaleza, o al menos los cineastas, pretendían.

A medida que la cámara de Deakins se desliza, se precipita, gira y parece ansiosa por investigar todo el espacio entre el cielo y el infierno, incluso cuando parece que ya han llegado a este último, los salarios incidentales de la guerra están por todas partes. De vez en cuando, surgen recuerdos de otras películas que involucran la vida en trincheras o largos viajes a través de paisajes peligrosos y llenos de muerte:  Paths of Glory,  Saving Private Ryan,  Full Metal Jacket, y A Very Long Engagement. Pero 1917 los supera a todos en términos de inmersión absoluta en un entorno ineludible, dominado por la miseria y la continua amenaza de muerte por muchos medios. Y si bien durante algún tiempo es difícil olvidarse de la complejidad de lo que el cinematógrafo y el director han logrado aquí, en cierto momento comienza a darlo por sentado y se involucra más en los detalles de la finalización del viaje. 

Pero, que la cinematografía no sea lo único que los motive a ir al cine: el guión está inteligentemente construído para que el diálogo entre caminatas extensas sirva como el proyector de la temática de la historia, introduciéndole a la audiencia cómo estos soldados, que han sido elegidos para la misión porque el hermano de Blake es uno de los soldados del Batallón que están tratando de salvar; pero la gran realidad de estos soldados es que están involucrados en esta guerra por la simple razón de que su país los necesita, a pesar de que no saben si tendrán la suerte de regresar con vida a sus hogares. El triste destino fatal de la guerra es uno de los temas que más trata la historia, con la cobertura de elementos visuales como los restos de soldados, ya sea británicos, franceses o alemanes, los terrenos destruidos y animales asesinados en el proceso, la constante angustia de si sobrevivirán y podrán volver a ver a sus seres queridos. Es una película que, tendrá una increíble fotografía, pero se preocupa por crear suficiente empatía con sus personajes y seguirlos hasta lugares de mala muerte.

A medida que los protagonistas se dirigen a su peligrosa misión, la justicia del día de primavera es superada por el barro y los cielos nublados, y acompañada por una música que enfatiza laboriosamente lo siniestro; la composición de Thomas Newman incrementa drásticamente en poco tiempo, así como el paisaje se transforma en un terreno árido y sin vida, adornado con alambre de púas.

A pesar de la gran complejidad de la técnica de narración de cuentos, el cuento en sí, escrito por Mendes y Wilson-Cairns es muy simple y satisfactorio, dependiendo de si no se evitará una masacre inevitable. Y todo viene previsiblemente envuelto en el inevitable lamento humanista sobre el trágico desperdicio, los millones de vidas perdidas, la destrucción innecesaria y el mal uso de la iniciativa creativa e industrial. 

¿Cuántas películas se tratan sobre la 1ra Guerra Mundial? El número es más específico que la cantidad de películas de las demás guerras, y muchos dirán que ya casi no quedan historias que contar, pero a lo largo del tiempo la industria del cine sigue rebuscando en el librito negro de la historia humana, aún enfocados en qué trata, pero también en su perspectiva y cómo se presenta en pantalla. En el caso de 1917, la película está tocando principalmente notas familiares en términos de historia y tema, expresando una visión concisa, enfocada y expertamente manejada con la cual hay poco que objetar, y el estilo extraordinario representa el fruto de un sueño largamente imaginado por parte de muchos directores y cinematógrafos. De ahora en adelante, cuando la discusión se centre en grandes obras de cinematografía y funcionamiento de cámaras,  1917  siempre tendrá que estar en lo más alto de la lista.

Los Golden Globes 2020 marcan el inicio de la carrera de los premios más importantes del cine y la televisión. Al igual que en años anteriores, las sorpresas no faltaron, sobretodo la galardonada mayor, 1917, que se llevó los premios a Mejor Película de Drama y Mejor Dirección, mientras Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood se llevó el premio a Mejor Película de Comedia o Musical, Mejor Guión y Mejor Actor de Reparto.

Mientras tanto, los premios en las categorías de televisión tuvieron una gran diversidad en su repartición, siendo Fleabag (con los premios a Mejor Comedia y Mejor Actriz), Chernobyl (con los premios a Mejor Serie Limitada y Mejor Actor de Reparto) y Succession (Mejor Drama y Mejor Actor) los que se repartieron los más importantes renglones.

Siéndoles bien honesta, a pesar de que mis predicciones no fueron las más acertadas, esto significa que lo que se pensaba sobre cierta película que no me atrae mucho no va a ocurrir.
