Temporada de Premios: Ganadores a los Premios de la Academia 2022

Los Premios de la Academia vuelven a dar de qué hablar al otorgarle el premio a Mejor Película a CODA, la gran sorpresa particular de la noche que se llevó junto a este Mejor Actor de Reparto y Mejor Guión Adaptado.

Desde inicios de esta temporada, las nominaciones han sido muy atípicas. Y a pesar de que hubo favoritas y nominados bien poderosos en algunas categorías, cada premiación tuvo su variación a quien premiaba en las categorías principales de la noche. Sin embargo, resulta una sorpresa muy poco grata ver a CODA coronarse con el premio principal a Mejor Película, cuando la competencia le daba ventaja a The Power of the Dog. 

Aún así... hay que reconocer que “CODA” hizo historia por varias partes: se convierte en la primera película de una plataforma de streaming en ganar un Oscar a la mejor película, y su victoria demuestra los cambios que se están dando en la industria para darle apertura a estas temáticas a ser reconocidas en los grandes premios. Aunque no estemos felices de que haya sido esa, da oportunidades a las siguientes historias similares.

Algunas gratas sorpresas fueron Jane Campion convirtiéndose en la tercera mujer en llevarse la estatuilla a Mejor Dirección, mientras que Kenneth Branagh se alzó con Mejor Guión Original con su autobiografía de Belfast.

Temporada de Premios: Ganadores al Screen Actors Guild Awards 2022

CODA, nominada a Mejor Película de Apple TV+, ganó el mayor premio de la noche, con Marlee Matlin, la única actriz sorda en la historia que ha ganado un Oscar, elogiando a SAG por validar el trabajo de los artistas sordos en su emotivo discurso de aceptación (pronunciado a través de un intérprete de ASL).

Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) y Will Smith (King Richard) recibieron grandes impulsos en sus respectivas campañas de los Oscar con victorias principales en los Premios SAG, con Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) llevándose a casa el trofeo de Actriz de Reparto. Aunque se esperaba que Kodi Smit-McPhee de The Power of the Dog se llevara la victoria como actor de reparto en solitario, Troy Kotsur de CODA logró una categoría sorpresiva para convertirse en el primer actor sordo en ganar un premio SAG individual.

Temporada de Premios: Nominados a los Premios de la Academia 2022

¡El momento que todos siempre estamos esperando finalmente está aquí! Aunque siéndoles honesta, esta ha sido la nominación más predecible.

Hoy los actores Tracee Ellis Ross y Leslie Jordan anunciaron los nominados a la 94.ª entrega Anual de los Premios de la Academia durante una presentación en vivo a través de su página oficial de YouTube.

Se revelaron los nominados para las 23 categorías, incluyendo Mejor Película, Actor y Actriz Principal y Mejor Director.

“The Power of the Dog” de Netflix lideró con 12 nominaciones, incluyendo mejor película, mejor director y reconocimiento para todos sus principales actores: Benedict Cumberbatch, la pareja de Kirsten Dunst y Jesse Plemons y Kodi Smit-McPhee. La directora Jane Campion es la primera mujer nominada dos veces a mejor directora.

A medida que el perfil de los Globos de Oro se reduce, los Critics Choice Awards han aumentado con sus nominaciones anuales a las mejores películas y series de 2021 en el período previo a los Oscar. La Asociación de Prensa Extranjera de Hollywood reconoció las mejores películas y programas de televisión del año, a través del anuncio de los nominados para la entrega no. 79.

La lista de nominados de este año en cine y televisión, anunciada con la ayuda de Snoop Dogg, incluye una variedad diversa de actores y proyectos, incluido el drama King Richard en Mejor Película y Mejor Actor, el thriller psicológico de Jane Campion The Power of The Dog obtuvo múltiples nominaciones (incluyendo Mejor Película, Mejor Director y premios de actuación para Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst y Kodi Smit-McPhee), así como Squid Game de Netflix, que obtuvo dos nominaciones para las estrellas O'Yeong-su y Lee Jung-jae, en la cima de su ubicación entre los nominados a Mejor Serie de Televisión (Drama).

Biopic sobre Richard Williams, un padre inasequible al desaliento que ayudó a criar a dos de las deportistas más extraordinarias de todos los tiempos, dos atletas que acabarían cambiando para siempre el deporte del tenis. 

Will Smith es una de las estrellas de cine más importantes de los últimos 30 años, lo cual es una de las razones por las que nunca ha sido particularmente bueno interpretando a personas que entran dentro de la categoría de "lo normal". Como agente secreto del gobierno que salvaba al mundo de una cucaracha alienígena gigante era increíblemente creíble. Como Muhammad Ali, hizo que encarnar al más grande del boxeo pareciera un movimiento lateral. Como vendedor de dispositivos médicos sin hogar en 1981 en San Francisco o científico sobreviviente armado de "I am Leyend", sentía que Smith no podía evitar desviarse hacia una especie de tristeza civil en personaje, como si la única alternativa que podía imaginar para estar en la cima del mundo era estar en el fondo, y esto le funcionaba de manera actoral.

La última categoría es donde cabe que Smith interprete a Richard Williams, padre franco de Venus y Serena, en una película biográfica de estudio sobre sus esfuerzos obsesivos por criar a las mejores tenistas de todos los tiempos. Inicialmente, ver a Smith pasar de cero a una caricatura en toda regla en las primeras escenas de “King Richard” con un acento exagerado de Louisiana y una postura encorvada tan pronunciada que prácticamente se puede ver el peso de las inseguridades de Williams aplastando su columna vertebral, respalda una y otra vez en el transcurso de su rápido tiempo de ejecución de 138 minutos que Richard Williams no es un hombre normal.

Lo primero que aprendemos sobre el padre de Venus y Serena en la carta de amor completamente autorizada y brillante que produjeron sus hijas es que Williams escribió un plan de 78 páginas que describe todas sus carreras antes de que nacieran. Escuchó a una jugadora de tenis en la televisión decir que ganó $47,000 en un torneo y decidió que tener un par de ellos en la casa no sería tan mala idea, incluso si esa casa está en Compton, una palabra que la mayoría de los entrenadores y comentaristas deportivos ni siquiera pueden decir sin una cantidad detectable de efecto denigrante.

Williams sabe lo que piensa la gente, es difícil pasar por alto la inferencia cuando alguien le pregunta si alguna vez ha considerado el baloncesto, pero nadie estuvo tan comprometidos con un plan como lo está Richard. Y las (cinco) hijas de Williams no tienen más remedio que aceptarlas, incluso cuando sospechan que el ajetreo de su padre puede estar menos motivado por su futuro potencial como mujeres negras en la América moderna que por su pasado formativo como hombre negro en el sur de la era de Jim Crow. Más tarde, en la manifestación más polémica de esta alegre película, la madre de Venus y Serena (una indomable Aunjanue Ellis) ofrece una perspectiva claramente diferente sobre las prioridades de su marido.

"King Richard" está feliz de desarrollarse como un tributo durante la mayor parte de la película, e incluso las escenas en las que la excentricidad de Williams roza la perversión se ven atenuadas por nuestro conocimiento de que Venus y Serena resultaron ser bastante impresionantes, y pasaron de tenistas destacadas a magnates brillantes y excelentes embajadoras de las chicas negras en todo el mundo. Ahora... la película biográfica de Green está bien ligera, tanto que Smith puede pasar la mayor parte en un registro cómico; sus concursos con los entrenadores de alto perfil de las chicas (Tony Goldwyn y un hilarante Jon Bernthal) están llenos de risas bien irónicas, al igual que la escena en la que termina una reunión de patrocinio literalmente tirándose por la borda en un trato de seis cifras.

La cinematografía cálida y acogedora de Robert Elswit parece inspirarse en estos momentos, siempre enfatizando el potencial sobre la presión, la esperanza y la desesperación. Esas son unas de las muchas razones por las que "King Richard" es una película tan fácil de ver: la película encarna el espíritu repetido a menudo, aunque cada vez más sospechoso, de asegurarse de que la diversión sea lo primero, tal y como Richard siempre exigía para sus hijas.

Para crédito de Smith, el propio Richard ofrece algunos matices muy necesarios a una película que se complace en valorizarlo como un visionario mientras elude algunos de los aspectos menos inspiradores de su vida (un hijo repudiado se menciona por ahí). Si el guión tarda en reconocer que Williams podría amar sinceramente a sus hijas y estar patológicamente absorto en sí mismo, la actuación de Smith no permite tal exclusividad mutua. Desde su contoneo hasta su obstinación y sus arrebatos de ira, Smith presenta a Williams como una figura más grande que la vida encerrada en un desempate sin fin con su propio sentido de valerse. Es un hombre terco, controlador e insondablemente tenaz cuyo éxito dejó atrás la fricción suficiente para justificar ser el tema de su propia película biográfica.
