Temporada de Premios 2024: Ganadores a la 96ta entrega de los Academy Awards

Oppenheimer fue nombrada mejor película en los Oscar 2024, que se entregaron el domingo.

La película de Christopher Nolan se llevó un total de siete premios durante la noche: a Nolan le otorgaron el premio al mejor director, Cillian Murphy ganó el premio al mejor actor y Robert Downey Jr. ganó el premio al mejor actor de reparto. La película también ganó premios a mejor fotografía, mejor banda sonora original y mejor edición.

Emma Stone ganó el premio a la mejor actriz por Poor Things, la cual también obtuvo tres premios de arte, por mejor diseño de vestuario, diseño de producción, y maquillaje y peluquería. Da'Vine Joy Randolph ganó el premio a la mejor actriz de reparto por The Holdovers.

The Boy and the Heron, de Hayao Miyazaki y Toshio Suzuki, se llevó el premio a la mejor película de animación, mientras que The Zone of Interest, de Jonathan Glazer, ganó el Oscar a la mejor película internacional y mejor sonido. 20 days in Mariupol ganó el premio al mejor documental.

Billie Eilish y Finneas O'Connell ganaron el Oscar a la mejor canción original por "What Was I Made For?" de Barbie, ella convirtiéndose en la ganadora más joven en recibir dos premios Oscars.

Justine Triet y Arthur Harari ganaron el premio al mejor guión original por Anatomy of a Fall, mientras que Cord Jefferson ganó el premio al mejor guión adaptado por American Fiction.

De cara a la ceremonia, Oppenheimer lideró las nominaciones al Oscar 2024, obteniendo un total de 13 nominaciones, seguida de Poor Things con 11, Killers of the Flower Moon con 10 y Barbie con ocho.

Crítica Cinéfila: The Zone of Interest

El comandante de Auschwitz Rudolf Höss y su esposa Hedwig se esfuerzan en construir una vida de ensueño para su familia en una casa con jardín cerca del campo.

A estas alturas no parece exagerado decir que Jonathan Glazer es incapaz de hacer una película que no sea vigorosamente original. Su primer largometraje de 2000, "Sexy Beast", elevó el thriller de gánsters británico. Cuatro años más tarde, su thriller de reencarnación, "Birth", obtuvo una respuesta fría de la mayoría de los críticos. Casi una década después, regresó con el hipnóticamente austero thriller de ciencia ficción "Under the Skin", sobre una súcubo alienígena que se aprovecha de hombres escoceses y descubre la empatía durante su ola de asesinatos.

La nueva película en alemán de Glazer, "The Zone of Interest", que llega después de otra ausencia de 10 años en las películas, es un devastador drama sobre el Holocausto como ningún otro, que demuestra con sorprendente eficacia el infalible control de la narración tonal y visual del formalista británico. Lo peor que se puede decir sobre el director es que, para tener un talento tan singular, es frustrantemente poco frecuente en sus producciones. Pero, por eso sus películas son tan singulares.

Adaptando la novela de Martin Amis de 2014 podando y remodelando radicalmente toda la trama, y estrechando su mirada a solo uno de los tres narradores, Glazer transforma al protagonista ficticio del libro en el oficial de las SS de la vida real en el que se inspiró, Rudolf Höss. Höss, el comandante con más años de servicio en el campo de concentración de Auschwitz, fue una fuerza líder en el perfeccionamiento de las técnicas de exterminio masivo implementadas durante la aceleración de la "Solución Final" de Hitler.

El otro elemento clave que se conserva es el escenario que da título tanto al libro como a la película. El área en cuestión son las aproximadamente 25 millas cuadradas que rodean Auschwitz en el oeste de Polonia.

El carácter eufemístico del término encaja con los temas de compartimentación y negación de la película de Glazer, explorados a través de la idílica vida de Höss (Christian Friedel), su esposa Hedwig (Sandra Hüller, la revelación de Toni Erdmann ) y sus cinco hijos en su hogar justo al otro lado del muro, desde el campo, a poca distancia del lugar donde se estaban cometiendo atrocidades indescriptibles. Esa yuxtaposición parece la esencia misma de lo que Hannah Arendt llamó “la banalidad del mal”, perfectamente capturada en las interpretaciones naturalistas del elenco. La película hace tácitamente la importante distinción entre el olvido y la simple negativa a reconocer el respaldo al asesinato en masa como algo más que una adhesión patriótica a la línea del partido. Los ecos de ese tipo de flexibilidad ética en muchos paisajes políticos modernos a nivel mundial son evidentes.

Trabajando con el director de fotografía polaco Łukasz Żal, quien filmó las hermosas piezas en blanco y negro "Ida" y "Cold War" de Pawel Pawlikowski, Glazer incorporó cámaras operadas remotamente en la reconstrucción de la residencia Höss realizada por el diseñador de producción Chris Oddy. Filmaron simultáneamente con hasta 10 cámaras en diferentes salas, sin luces de película y permitiendo que los actores se movieran sin obstáculos. Esto encaja con el esquema visual del exterior en el extenso jardín: el orgullo y la alegría de Hedwig con su invernadero, árboles frutales y huertos, todo ello cuidadosamente diseñado según los registros históricos. La película se desarrolla predominantemente en planos generales fijos bajo luz natural, estableciendo un estilo de observación imparcial que de alguna manera hace que su escrutinio sea más escalofriante.

Del mismo modo, el inquietante uso de la música de Mica Levi, que sigue el estresante trabajo del compositor experimental en "Under the Skin" al fusionar la partitura con el sonido ambiental, está pensado con la búsqueda de ofrecer nuevas maneras para que la composición musical en el cine traspase los límites. El prólogo de la película se presenta unos minutos de pantalla negra, interrumpidos sólo por las palabras del título al principio y acompañados por la partitura de Levi, turbia y malévola al principio, que luego explota en una aterradora cacofonía al final. La película está interrumpida intermitentemente por violentos sonidos de cuernos que suenan como los gritos heridos de animales de otro mundo.  

La familia Höss aparece por primera vez haciendo un picnic junto al río con amigos en un día soleado, y la cámara a menudo los capta en el jardín, celebrando un cumpleaños o disfrutando en la piscina durante una fiesta. La clara visibilidad (y presumiblemente el olor) del humo que sale de los crematorios del campo y el sonido de los gritos de los prisioneros, los ladridos de los perros guardianes o los oficiales ordenando ejecuciones parecen ni siquiera registrarse. Todo el horror se vuelve casi como el ruido de fondo de un televisor encendido en otra habitación de una casa. Pero en lugar de normalizar la aparente inmunidad de la familia a las atrocidades, la decisión de permanecer enteramente en el lado civil del muro hace que la pesadilla sea más desgarradora. Lo que no se ve a menudo es más aterrador. Incluso el hecho de que apenas se pronuncie una palabra de retórica hitleriana hace que la fría realidad de todo ello sea más dura.

El guión de Glazer se mueve hábilmente entre instantáneas ordinarias de la vida doméstica de la familia Höss: Hedwig riéndose con las esposas de otros oficiales en la mesa de la cocina acerca de sus criadas judías no remuneradas como si no estuvieran allí; Rudolf cerraba y trababa cada puerta de forma rutinaria por la noche; uno de sus hijos pequeños jugando solo en su habitación, sin siquiera inmutarse ante el ruido del disparo de un guardia a un prisionero, y las responsabilidades profesionales del patriarca, como una reunión de negocios informal en la que él y sus colegas discuten métodos óptimos para la incineración de alto volumen.

Sólo en raras ocasiones la realidad del campo de exterminio invade con fuerza su conciencia, especialmente durante una tarde que Rudolf pasa pescando y paseando en canoa por el río con sus hijos. Horrorizado al darse cuenta de que la superficie del agua está salpicada de cenizas de cuerpos quemados, apresura a los niños a entrar para que los limpien. Pero esta urgencia quizás es más por el contacto con esa raza que buscaban exterminar, y no por la toxicidad con los residuos incinerados.

Los interludios más extraños e inquietantes de la película se desarrollan con el sonido de Rudolf leyendo cuentos antes de dormir. Las imágenes cambian a imágenes térmicas, mostrando a una joven aportando su granito de arena al movimiento partidista judío, escabulléndose por la noche para recoger manzanas y peras, y dejarlas donde los prisioneros puedan encontrarlas.

El conflicto que rompe la alegría de la familia se produce cuando Rudolf se entera de que lo van a trasladar a la oficina central, cerca de Berlín, medida que protesta en vano. Hedwig se enfurece porque espera para decírselo hasta que desaparezca cualquier esperanza de revertir la decisión, recordándole que vivir lejos de la ciudad, en campo abierto, ha sido su sueño desde que tenían 17 años. Su enojo se derrama durante una molestia momentánea con una criada, escupiendo que podría hacer que su marido esparciera las cenizas de la mujer en un campo.

En las reuniones de alto nivel que siguen, Rudolf encabeza el procedimiento para manejar una afluencia masiva de judíos húngaros, como si estuviera manejando cualquier envío de fábrica ordinario. Al informar más tarde a Hedwig de la noticia de la aprobación de Himmler, dice: "¡Estoy muy contento!" Estos destellos de burocracia e infraestructura estándar aplicadas sin un atisbo de emoción al exterminio genocida le hielan la sangre a cualquiera.

Glazer deja para el final la exposición exclusiva a lo que hay más allá del muro en Auschwitz, con un cambio de tiempo y un breve desvío hacia el documental que recuerda la mirada sin pestañear del histórico cortometraje de 1956 de Alain Resnais, "Noche y niebla". El repugnante impacto contundente se ve realzado por la naturaleza cotidiana de todo lo que sucede en torno a lo que estamos viendo, y la erupción de la música de Levi que sigue es como una alarma que suena, recordándonos que debemos permanecer alerta a los bucles cíclicos de la historia.

Temporada de Premios 2024: Ganadores a la 77ma entrega de los British Academy Film Awards

“Y el BAFTA es para... Oppenheimer”. Esas palabras estuvieron en boca de los presentadores de la ceremonia de los Premios BAFTA, en un total de siete ocasiones en la ceremonia británica ocurrida el pasado domingo, presentada por el actor escocés David Tennant (Doctor Who,  Inside Man).

Los premios para "Oppenheimer" incluyeron el premio al mejor actor para Cillian Murphy, al mejor actor de reparto para Robert Downey Jr., al mejor director para Christopher Nolan y a la mejor película para Nolan y otros miembros del equipo cinematográfico. Los dos premios BAFTA para Nolan significan que la tercera vez fue la vencida para el gran cineasta británico que nunca antes había ganado un premio de la Academia Británica.

Oppenheimer había liderado el grupo al inicio de la noche con 13 nominaciones. Sin embargo, el ganador del récord BAFTA sigue siendo "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", la película de 1969 dirigida por George Roy Hill y protagonizada por Paul Newman y Robert Redford, con nueve BAFTA.

La comedia negra y fantástica científica de Yorgos Lanthimos,  "Poor Things", que había sido nominada en 11 categorías, también tuvo una gran noche en los BAFTA, ganando cinco, incluido uno para Emma Stone como mejor actriz. "The Zone of Interest", de Jonathan Glazer,  recibió tres premios de nueve nominaciones. 

Pero el drama criminal occidental de Martin Scorsese, "Killers of the Flower Moon", que también había alcanzado nueve nominaciones, terminó sin ganar, al igual que Barbie y Maestro.

La estrella alemana Sandra Hüller también se quedó sin reconocimientos tras haber sido nominada a "The Zone of Interest" en la categoría de mejor actriz de reparto y como mejor actriz principal por su papel en  "Anatomy of a Fall". Al final, el reconocimiento a mejor actriz de reparto fue para Da'Vine Joy Randolph por "The Holdovers", mientras que Stone recibió el BAFTA a la mejor actriz. La victoria de esta última en un campo de nominaciones muy competitivo, que incluía a Fantasia Barrino ("The Color Purple") y Vivian Oparah ("Rye Lane") significa que los espectadores del BAFTA siguen teniendo que esperar por la primera ganadora negra a mejor actriz. 

Stone cautivó al público con un discurso de aceptación, en el que agradeció a su madre, por darle la vida y ser la mejor persona que conoce, y a su profesor de dialecto, por no reírse cuando tuvo que enseñarle a decir “agua” en inglés en lugar del estilo americano, dado que su personaje era británico. “Gracias, Inglaterra, por aceptarme”, añadió. También provocó risas cuando agradeció al guionista de Poor Things, Tony McNamara, por la frase "Debo ir a golpear a ese bebé". Stone dijo: “Me cambió la vida”.

Otro momento memorable de la noche fue el premio a la mejor película de animación para "The Boy and The Heron" de la leyenda del anime japonés Hayao Miyazaki y Toshio Suzuki. Sin embargo, los ganadores no estuvieron presentes.
